Your Consultation

During a consultation with Dr. Mesna, you will discuss your health history, allergies, and skin type, as well as areas of concern and your desired treatment outcome. Dr. Mesna will explain the procedure, as well as our other available skin care treatments, and help you decide if laser skin resurfacing is the right option for you.

There are a wide variety of lasers and various strengths available to choose from. The gentler lasers produce an effect much like microdermabrasion, while the stronger lasers work at a deeper level to achieve more comprehensive rejuvenation. During your appointment, Dr. Mesna will discuss the different lasers and select the right one for your needs.

What to Expect During Your Procedure

If you are treating a small part of your face, such as your crow’s feet or nasolabial folds, Dr. Mesna will first numb the area using a local anesthetic. However, if you are receiving treatment on your entire face, he may recommend general anesthesia. He will then direct a highly precise laser beam at your skin and deliver short, rapid pulses of light to remove damaged skin. This outer layer of skin is made up of dead cells which protect and shield the living cells of the underlying dermis. When the epidermis is removed, the body quickly generates replacement cells. This newly formed epidermis is typically smoother, softer, and more youthful looking.

If Dr. Mesna is treating a small targeted area, the procedure typically takes about thirty minutes. If you are receiving laser skin resurfacing on your entire face, treatment can last up to two hours.

Results & Healing

Following laser resurfacing, the treated areas will start to peel, exposing the fresh, pink skin underneath. Pinkness can persist for several weeks or even months, and the results of your treatment may not be evident until recovery is complete. However, the vast majority of patients feel that the stunning results are worth the wait. You may benefit from:

  • Diminished lines and wrinkles
  • Improvement in the appearance of birthmarks and age spots
  • Reduction of scars from acne, chicken pox, or injury
  • Removal of precancerous skin growths
  • Minimized pores or blackheads
  • Softer, firmer, and healthier skin
  • A more youthful appearance and enhanced self-confidence

Following laser skin resurfacing, you may experience some irritation, which some patients compare to the feeling of a minor sunburn. Dr. Mesna will recommend a disinfecting solution, skin care products, and moisturizers to aid in recovery and achieve the best results following your procedure. You will also be very sensitive to sun exposure for up to a year following treatment, so you should liberally apply sunscreen every time you go outside and avoid excessive sun exposure.
