Breast Lift

Over time, the breasts begin to sag. This is caused by a number of factors, including aging, weight changes, and pregnancy.

If you are unhappy about the appearance of your breasts, a breast lift can help you regain your youthful shape.

At Mesna Plastic Surgery in Minneapolis, MN, we can address unwanted sagging with a breast lift.

I recently had a tummy tuck with Dr. Mesna in late December of 2020. I had been self-conscious about the hanging skin on my abdomen for years which was compounded by separation of my abdominal muscles from 2 pregnancies. Dr. Mesna exceeded my expectations! Dr. Mesna is meticulous and a perfectionist, my scar is so thin and perfect and I know it will fade to nothing over time. My only regret is not doing this sooner!

Why Do Breasts Begin to Sag?

Breasts naturally lose elasticity and respond to the pull of gravity over the years, causing fat tissue and skin to sag. Some patients also complain of unsightly, wrinkled skin caused by skin stretching and fat loss along the cleavage area. Dr. Mesna performs breast lifts to reshape the breast tissue, tighten skin, and reposition the nipples for a perkier, more youthful look.

Breast Lift Surgery Techniques

We offer three different types of breast lift surgery at our practice. While the anchor-keyhole technique is the most common type of breast lift surgery performed at our Minneapolis practice, the right one for you is a matter of personal choice. It also depends on Dr. Mesna’s recommendation on what will best meet your specific needs and goals.

All of our breast lift surgeries are outpatient, same-day surgeries performed under the comfort of general anesthesia.

Crescent or Doughnut Mastopexy

This technique is utilized for minor repositioning of the nipple and results in less visible scarring. However, it may not be well-suited to women with very large breasts.

During a doughnut mastopexy procedure, two incisions are made along the areola. These incisions are made in concentric circles along the outside of the nipple. Once the incisions have been made, the circular strip of skin is removed and the surrounding skin is pulled taut and reattached to the nipple. This, in effect, tightens the breast. The name of the procedure reflects the shape of the skin that is removed, which has the basic appearance of a doughnut.

Mini or Lollipop Mastopexy

Like a doughnut mastopexy, a lollipop breast lift is for minor repositioning of breast tissue. It cannot correct excessive sagging or significant removal of excess tissue.

In a lollipop or mini breast lift procedure, a circular incision is made along the outside of the areola. Another incision is made down the front of the breast to the crease along the ribcage and up to where the nipple will be moved. When the nipple is migrated, the vertical incisions are pulled taut beneath the new location of the nipple. The resulting scar, a faint line running down from the center of the nipple, gives the appearance of a “lollipop.”

Full Breast Lift or Anchor-Keyhole Incision

With this technique, a greater volume of tissue can be moved. It can correct excessive sagging, as it places more tension (lift) under the breast rather than around the nipple. It is ideal for patients who want breast reduction with a lift, as the approach provides an outcome that is better tolerated.

Three incisions are made: a circular incision around the areola, a vertical incision extending downward from the nipple, and a curved horizontal incision in the breast crease. The nipple is repositioned higher on the breast, excess skin and breast tissue are removed, and the incisions are sutured shut. The resulting scar has the appearance of an anchor.

Considerations Before Surgery Breast Lift, Pregnancy, and Breastfeeding

Regardless of which technique is employed in your treatment, Dr. Mesna always strives to avoid removing the nipple entirely during surgery. This focus means your breast lift should not interfere with or prevent you from nursing in the future. However, it is important to note that the best time to pursue a breast lift is after you are finished having children for optimal long-term results.

Combining Breast Augmentation and Breast Lift

A breast lift procedure may be an excellent option for you if you would like to reverse the aging process and regain a more youthful breast shape. Many breast lift patients prefer a natural look without additional enhancement, while others seek to augment breast size to elevate and reshape the breasts.

Should you desire to add volume and enhanced contour to your breasts, Dr. Mesna can combine your breast lift surgery with breast augmentation using breast implants. A breast lift with implants offers a number of benefits and can produce excellent results. During a consultation at our Minneapolis practice, you can discuss all your treatment options and goals and the best techniques for your needs. You can also request a personalized treatment outline and cost estimate.

Outpatient Surgery

Because this procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, you will typically return home the same day as your surgery. You should plan to have a trusted companion accompany you home and provide assistance for the first few days of your recovery.

Side Effects

Swelling, bruising, and some tenderness are to be expected in the initial two-week recovery period. Complete recovery takes place gradually over six weeks. You may experience some numbness during this time.

Sleeping

You should avoid sleeping on your stomach for several weeks after surgery for your comfort and an improved outcome.

Showering

If drains aren't placed, you can shower the day after surgery. Many patients prefer to wait two days for incisions to close. You can use sponge baths for daily hygiene in the meantime.

Bras

A surgical bra must be worn for a few days, replaced by a support bandage or sports bra, which should remain in place for several weeks.

Returning to Work

Some patients return to work after one to two weeks of rest, unless they have strenuous jobs that require heavy lifting.

Exercise

Patients should start taking light walks a day or two after surgery. However, strenuous activity should be avoided for four to six weeks.

Scarring

Your scars will initially be noticeable but will fade over several months.

Final Results

You can expect to see your full results several months after surgery as your breasts settle into their new position.
