Enhance the Appearance of Your Nose with Bridge Rhinoplasty By on May 24, 2016

Patient with an attractive and well-proportioned noseThe nose is a central feature on the face, so it can have a great impact on a person’s appearance. Even minor imperfections can draw attention away from other facial features and leave patients feeling self-conscious about their appearance. This is probably why rhinoplasty is such a popular cosmetic procedure. Rhinoplasty can alter the size and shape of the nose to improve facial proportions and eliminate imperfections that detract from a patient’s natural beauty.

Dr. Gregory Mesna is skilled in rhinoplasty treatment and has extensive experience performing this surgery. He is able to make subtle alterations that refine and enhance a patient’s nose without completely changing their appearance. Dr. Mesna is also able to tailor this procedure to each patient’s unique needs. He offers bridge rhinoplasty to Minneapolis, MN patients who are looking to address imperfections that affect the bridge of the nose.

Candidates for Bridge Rhinoplasty

In order to be considered an ideal candidate for rhinoplasty in general, patients should be in good overall health (with no complications that would increase the risks of surgery), have realistic expectations for the results of surgery, and be at least 13 years of age or older (it is important to know that the underlying facial structure has stopped growing). Of these patients, those who are specific candidates for a bridge rhinoplasty are those who are looking to correct any of the following imperfections:

  • A nose that is crooked in appearance due to an uneven bridge
  • A nose that is too long
  • A nose with an indentation along the bridge
  • A nose with a hump or other irregularity along the bridge
  • A nose with a flat bridge, or one that lacks volume

The Procedure

Each bridge rhinoplasty will be customized to meet the specific needs of the patient, so each procedure is unique. Generally, a bridge rhinoplasty is performed as an outpatient procedure with the patient under the effects of general anesthesia. Dr. Mesna will make a series of small, well-hidden incisions (either on the inside of the nose, across the columella, or in the creases of the nose) that will allow him to lift the skin so that he can access the underlying bone and cartilage. Necessary alterations will then be made to address the imperfections that are present. Depending on each patient’s needs, this may include shaving down a hump in the nose, straightening the bridge of the nose, or using grafts to fill in indentations or add volume to the bridge of the nose. When Dr. Mesna is satisfied with the alterations that have been made, the skin will be redraped over the nose and the incisions will be closed.

Recovery

Following the bridge rhinoplasty procedure, it is important for patients to take several days to rest and recover. During the initial recovery period, patients will wear a splint over the nose; the splint supports the structure of the nose as it heals. This splint is typically removed by the end of the first week of recovery. While there may still be some bruising and swelling present at this time, most patients feel well enough to return to their regular routines within a week or two of surgery. Over time, swelling will continue to dissipate and patients can enjoy the appearance of their newly refined nose.
