Liposuction Techniques By on September 26, 2011

Getting the look you’ve always wanted isn’t always easy. This is especially true when it comes to getting a trimmer, slimmer body. You can eat healthy and exercise regularly, but sometimes there are stubborn pockets of fat that will just not go away. Thankfully, Edina plastic surgeon Dr. Gregory T. Mesna has a solution that’s great for this particular dilemma. That solution is liposuction.

About Liposuction

Now, liposuction is not meant for weight loss. It’s a highly accurate way of removing deposits of fat from different parts of the body that do not respond to diet and exercise. The surgery will involve the insertion of a tool known as a cannula beneath the skin. Using safe suction, the fat deposits will be extracted from the treatment area.

Liposuction Techniques

There are several ways that liposuction can be performed, each one presenting special advantages over traditional liposuction of the past. One reason that Dr. Mesna is well-regarded as a plastic surgeon serving the St. Paul and Minneapolis area is that he offers a number of different options when it comes to fat removal. Let’s briefly go through some of these options for liposuction and also look at how liposuction can be performed to treat various parts of the body.

Tumescent Liposuction

Tumescent liposuction involves the injection of a special liquid into the treatment area. This tumescent fluid primarily consists of a local anesthetic and epinephrine (which shrinks blood vessels). This tumescent fluid will cause the fat to swell up and become firm, making it easier to remove. This method results in less pain during treatment and improved recovery experiences for patients as well.

Ultrasonic Liposuction

When you visit our practice for Edina liposuction, you may undergo ultrasonic liposuction. This is essentially the tumescent liposuction technique with a difference. The cannula will ultrasonic waves that breaks up fat deposits into a liquid, making the fat even easier to remove.

Power-Assisted Liposuction (PAL)

Power-assisted liposuction is another option we may use. Whereas the cannula emits ultrasonic waves in ultrasonic liposuction, the cannula in power-assisted liposuction vibrates rapidly, loosening fat deposits for easier removal.

Liposuction and Body Contouring

Liposuction if most commonly thought of as a body contouring surgery, which is true. When a tummy tuck surgery (abdominoplasty) or arm lift or body lift is performed, liposuction is often used in order to take care of any problem pockets of fat that may be around. It has other applications, however, and the above techniques help us expand its use beyond the belly.

Liposuction and Facial Plastic Surgery

It’s true: liposuction can be used in some facial plastic surgery procedures to help rejuvenate a patient’s appearance. This may involve the removal of excess fat around the neckline or jowls, for instance, in order to make you look slimmer and refreshed.

Liposuction and Breast Enhancement Surgery

Liposuction even has its uses when it comes to breast enhancement surgery, particularly with breast lift surgery and breast reduction surgery. For more pert, firm, and nicely shaped breasts, a lit fat removal may be what’s required.
