Achieve Natural-looking Results with Collagen Injections

Collagen injections were one of the first treatments recognized as a long-lasting dermal filler that produced extremely natural-looking results. Collagen is a naturally occurring substance found in the body, which makes it a safe, effective method to enhance your natural beauty. Today, these injections are a great option for patients who want to smooth lines and wrinkles on the face. You can receive collagen injections at either of Mesna Plastic Surgery's Minneapolis locations. How Does Collagen Affect Our Skin?

A beautiful woman with full, beautiful lips holds her hand gingerly to her face.Collagen acts a a supportive framework within the dermis (the layer just below the epidermis, or outermost layer of the skin). Collagen fills the spaces in the dermis that are not filled with blood vessels, nerves, and hair follicles, and adds volume to the skin. As we age, the collagen in our skin breaks down. Meanwhile, as our facial muscles contract our skin into repetitive positions, wrinkles and lines are created. As collagen breaks down, skin can also droop or look more thin.

Dr. Gregory T. Mesna and our team at Mesna Plastic Surgery use collagen injections that are derived from animal collagen. The collagen we use is highly purified and tested for use as a dermal injectable prior to its distribution.

How are Collagen Injections Performed?

Collagen is a safe, trusted dermal filler with few risks. To minimize the risk of a possible allergic reaction, patients are required to undergo a quick allergy test at our practice a few days prior to their injection appointment. Since it is naturally found in the body, the large majority of our patients have no allergic reaction.

Similar to other dermal fillers available at our offices, like Radiesse® and Dysport®, collagen is injected through a thin needle. Before each injection, the targeted areas are cleaned thoroughly. Some patients may also request a topical anesthetic to minimize any discomfort. Each injection takes just seconds.

Collagen can be injected into several areas of the face, including the forehead, between the eyebrows (commonly known as the "elevens"), at the corners of the eyes, on the sides of the mouth, in the lines extending between the nostrils and corners of the mouth, and other areas. Collagen injections may also be used in and directly around the lips, providing a suitable option for patients with thin or wrinkled lips who want a to achieve a pouty, youthful look.

Healing & Results

Immediately after the injection, collagen may cause some redness and swelling at the treatment site. Collagen injections contain a small amount of saline (salt water), which will be absorbed by the body after injection. To compensate for this loss of volume, we use a slightly larger amount of the solution in the treatment areas to ensure satisfactory results once the saline has dissipated.

Within a few days, patients will be able to enjoy their full treatment results. Results may last anywhere from three to six months or longer, and are dependent upon a patient's age, skin type, lifestyle, and other factors. Most patients maintain a regular regimen of injections to maintain a rejuvenated appearance.
