How Much Time Should I Take Off from Work After Plastic Surgery? By on January 24, 2017

A woman restingSo many people who live in the greater Minneapolis area have come to our practice for cosmetic surgery and other kinds of advanced aesthetic enhancements. Whether they undergo body contouring and sculpting surgery or a facial procedure, we routinely achieve excellent results. Part of the reason for this is our emphasis on recovery.

After undergoing a procedure, patients will take some time off from work. Let's go over some basics so you understand what the healing process is like.

Make Rest Your First Priority

Patients need to avoid strenuous physical activities for the first few days to the first few weeks after surgery. This allows patients to rest without stress or worry, and for any visible bruising and swelling to face before being out in public.

This is why it's important to take time off from work. The time off required is different depending on the surgery you undergo.

Average Time Off from Work for Facial Plastic Surgery

If you undergo a facial plastic surgery procedure, you'll typically follow these guidelines for time off:

  • Brow Lift Surgery - 1 to 2 weeks off from work
  • Facelift - 2 weeks off from work
  • Nose Job (Rhinoplasty) - 2 weeks off from work
  • Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) - 2 weeks off from work

A patient's recovery time can vary based on occupation and how the patient looks and feels as they recover.

Time Off Work for Breast Enhancement Surgery

If you undergo a surgery to enhance the breasts or chest area, you'll typically follow these guidelines for time off:

  • Breast Enlargement Surgery – 1 week off from work
  • Breast Lift Surgery - 1 week off from work
  • Breast Reduction Surgery - 1 week off from work
  • Male Breast Reduction - 1 week off from work

A patient's recovery time can vary based on occupation and how the patient looks and feels as they recover.

Time Off Work for Body Contouring Surgery

If you undergo body contouring, body sculpting, or skin tightening surgeries, you'll typically follow these guidelines for time off:

  • Arm Lift Surgery (Brachioplasty) - 1 week off from work
  • Liposuction - 1 week off from work
  • Tummy Tuck Surgery (Abdominoplasty) - 3 to 4 weeks off from work
  • Mommy Makeover Surgery - 3 to 4 weeks off from work
  • Body Lift Surgery - 3 to 4 weeks off from work

Just as above, a patient's recovery time can vary based on occupation and how the patient looks and feels as they recover.

A Note for People with Physically Demanding Jobs

If you are an athlete or have a job that requires you to lift heavy objects or engage in strenuous activities, it's important that you take additional time off. You might even consider returning to work but having someone else perform the strenuous job duties until your surgeon says you are healed enough to do them yourself. This helps prevent post-op complications and ensures optimal results moving forward.
