Get Rid of Unwanted Lines and Wrinkles with BOTOX® Cosmetic By on March 30, 2016

BOTOX® Cosmetic logo in front of a woman with smooth skinThe face is the most expressive area of the body. Add to this the fact that the face is constantly exposed to the sun, wind, and other environmental elements and it is no wonder that the facial skin often begins to look aged before other areas of the body. These signs of aging often develop in the form of fine lines and wrinkles around the face. Understandably, most people want to eliminate these wrinkles and restore a more youthful appearance. BOTOX® Cosmetic is a non-surgical treatment that smooths and refreshes the skin by minimizing or completely eliminating lines, wrinkles, and creases. Dr. Gregory T. Mesna offers BOTOX® Cosmetic candidates this safe and effective treatment at his Minneapolis, MN practice to help patients achieve their aesthetic goals.

BOTOX® Cosmetic Candidates

BOTOX® treatment involves injections of a diluted solution that is derived of botulinum toxin, a neurotoxin that serves to relax or temporarily paralyze the facial muscles that contribute to lines and wrinkles. This treatment is FDA approved and has been shown to be a safe and effective treatment for lines and wrinkles, particularly those in the upper third of the face. Because this is a non-invasive treatment that does not require the use of any anesthetic, virtually all of Dr. Mesna’s patients should be viable BOTOX® Cosmetic candidates.

BOTOX® Cosmetic is most effective on fine lines and moderate wrinkles. Because BOTOX® Cosmetic can be used to treat multiple areas of the face, this treatment is a particularly good option for patients with the following concerns:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Creases or wrinkles between the eyes
  • Forehead wrinkles or creases
  • Frown lines
  • Wrinkles or bands around the neck

When these problems are present, but are not yet severe, BOTOX® Cosmetic alone can be effective in smoothing the skin to give patients a more youthful appearance. If lines and wrinkles are more prevalent, or are combined with loose, saggy skin, BOTOX® treatment can be used alongside other cosmetic treatments, such as dermal fillers or facial plastic surgery in order to further enhance the results of treatment.

Poor BOTOX® Candidates

Although BOTOX® Cosmetic is safe for the majority of patients, there are some who make poor BOTOX® Cosmetic candidates. BOTOX® Cosmetic is not an ideal treatment option for patients with any of the following conditions:

  • Allergies to any of the ingredients in BOTOX® Cosmetic
  • Skin infection or other irritation at the treatment site
  • A muscle or nerve condition
  • Illness or infection in the body
  • Those who are pregnant or nursing

If any of these conditions are present, Dr. Mesna can discuss alternative treatment options or, if the situation is temporary, treatment can be put off until a later date.
