Mommy Makeover Recovery: What Patients Can Expect By on March 13, 2015

A woman on the beachWe at Mesna Plastic Surgery are proud to help patients in and around the Minneapolis area with their body sculpting needs. The mommy makeover is especially effective for body contour issues after pregnancy and childbirth. The combination of various surgeries can lead to a reduction of sagging and stretchmarks.

Let's consider what the recovery is like so you have realistic expectations about the surgical process.

Common Side Effects After Mommy Makeover

After a mommy makeover has been performed, the following side effects are most common:

  • Soreness and discomfort
  • Bruising
  • Swelling
  • Redness around treatment areas
  • Grogginess and fatigue
  • Irritability

Keep in mind that these side effects are temporary and quite manageable so long as patients get ample rest and follow their pre-op and post-op instructions to the letter.

Activities to Avoid as You Recover from a Mommy Makeover

While you recover from a mommy makeover, be sure to avoid the following activities:

  • Heavy lifting
  • Exercise and cardio
  • Sexual activity
  • Bending at the waist
  • Smoking
  • Drinking alcoholic beverages
  • Visiting saunas
  • Using hot tubs

Your focus, especially in the early days after a mommy makeover, should be on rest and making a full recovery. Put as little stress on your system early on.

Follow-up Visits with Your Cosmetic Surgeon

As you recover from surgery, there will be a few follow-up visits with your cosmetic surgeon. The first of these follow-ups will usually take place about a week after the surgery has been performed. Additional follow-ups will be scheduled as needed. Patients should attend all of these follow-ups as scheduled and also feel free to contact the practice at any point if there is a pressing issue or urgent question that needs to be addressed.

What to Expect After the First Two Weeks

After the first two weeks of healing, mommy makeover patients will notice significant improvements with regard to their side effects, with major reduction of bruising, swelling, and discomfort. Usually by this time any drainage tubes in place following body sculpting surgery will be removed. In many cases, patients will be well enough to return to work (depending on job duties) and to engage in light exercise.

Patients may still be required to wear compression garments after two weeks have passed to ensure healing that's as comfortable as possible. This will be considered in greater detail during the consultation process and based on the recommendations of your surgeon.

What to Expect at the End of a Month

By the end of a month, patients should notice major improvements with regard to their various side effects. They should be back to work and able to engage in most of the activities they did before surgery. Mild swelling is common, though will continue to fade. Scars may be discolored, but the condition will abate with time as well.

Follow-ups are less frequent from this point forward, though contact with the practice is recommended to address various questions related to the body contouring process.
