Breast Lift Techniques By on September 24, 2012

Edina Breast Lift TechniquesAs women grow older, one area of the body that can show signs of aging is the breasts. The breasts can lose their perky, youthful appearance as our skin loses its elasticity and the breasts begin to sag. This can be a particular problem for women who have experienced pregnancy or significant weight loss. Some women are even genetically predisposed to the problem. Women do not need to suffer through this problem or let it affect their self esteem. Dr. Gregory T. Mesna, a leading Edina plastic surgeon, can perform breast lift surgery to “lift” the breasts and give patients a more youthful appearance.

During a breast lift surgery, Dr. Mesna removes excess skin and tissue and repositions the nipple.

  • Anchor incision:For patients with heavier breasts or severe signs of sagging, an “anchor” incision will be used.  This incision is made around the nipple-areolar complex and down to the crease under the breast.
  • Doughnut incision:Patients with less sagging may be candidates for a “doughnut-style” incision. With this option, Dr. Mesna creates two concentric circular incisions. This technique leaves just a single scar around the edge of the areola.

Dr. Mesna will discuss these surgical techniques with you and determine which incision is the best for your unique case.

The Procedure

Through the breast lift incisions, we can give the breasts a lifted appearance by removing fat and skin from the lower breast. When the incision is closed we will move the nipple to a higher location on the breast. When surgery and recovery is complete, patients can expect breasts that sit higher and have a more youthful appearance.

For some of Dr. Mesna’s patients in Edina, breast augmentation may be recommended along with breast lift surgery to give the breasts a fuller, shapelier appearance. This will depend on each individual case and should be discussed with Dr. Mesna. Breast augmentation involves the placement of saline or silicone-gel implants in the breast pocket; in many cases, Dr. Mesna can place the implants through the same incisions that are used for the breast lift.

Recovery

To avoid any complications of surgery, you should give yourself full time to recover. You should wear a bra at all times for the first two to three weeks. This offers support and protects the incision site. It is common to experience some swelling or bruising along with mild pain. If you experience any severe symptoms you should talk to Dr. Mesna. Within six weeks following surgery, you should be able to return to all of your normal activities.

Complications

Most patients come through breast lift surgery without suffering from any complications. In rare cases, bleeding, infection, or loss of sensation in the nipple area can occur. If you suffer from any complications, see Dr. Mesna to discuss your symptoms.
