Mini Tummy Tuck: Achieve a Flatter, More Toned Stomach

A mini tummy tuck is a less extensive version of a traditional tummy tuck. It is often recommended to patients with moderate excess stomach fat and skin below the belly button who wish to achieve a more toned midsection. Dr. Gregory T. Mesna will explain the procedure and how it can benefit you during a consultation. Schedule your mini tummy tuck consultation at our Minneapolis, MN, office today.

What is a Mini Tummy Tuck?

toned midsectionAlso known as a mini abdominoplasty, a mini tummy tuck is a surgical procedure designed to help patients sculpt and tighten the midsection to create a slimmer waistline. While a traditional tummy tuck is often recommended to patients with excessive abdominal skin and stubborn belly fat, mini tummy tucks are typically recommended to those who only have a small amount of loose or protruding abdominal tissue. Often, this approach can be beneficial for women who have had a C-section that leaves tissue lose below the navel.

The Procedure

A mini tummy tuck can be performed under general anesthesia, or with only a local anesthetic and mild sedation. During your mini tummy tuck procedure, Dr. Mesna will make a small incision below the navel to expose a section of the abdominal wall. Next, he will remove any excess fat and tissue before tightening the stomach muscles. Depending on your goals, and Dr. Mesna's recommendation, he may also perform liposuction to help contour your stomach. Finally, he will tighten and suture the remaining skin.

Recovery & Post-operative Care

Recovery from a mini tummy tuck is usually shorter than that of a traditional tummy tuck. Following your mini tummy tuck procedure, you will either be discharged after a few hours, or the following morning. For the first few days after your surgery, you may experience some pain and swelling. Dr. Mesna can prescribe pain medication to help minimize any discomfort. Most patients are able to return to work after one to two weeks. However, you will still need to avoid placing strain on the incision site for the next six weeks. Dr. Mesna will determine when you can resume normal activity. The resulting scar can be easily hidden by a bikini.

Candidates

Those who are in good physical health but struggle with stubborn stomach fat deposits in spite of diet and exercise often make excellent candidates for mini tummy tuck surgery. In addition to being in good overall health, candidates should:

  • Have realistic expectations
  • Be close to their ideal body weight (within 30 pounds)
  • Have laxity in the muscle below the belly button
  • Have only minor drooping or sagging abdominal skin

Patients who are still trying to lose weight, or women who are planning on having more children, should not undergo this procedure until after they have reached their goals. Because the procedure involves tightening the vertical muscles in the abdomen, extreme weight fluctuations and pregnancy can reverse the results of a mini tummy tuck.

The results of a mini tummy tuck can be long-lasting if you maintain a healthy lifestyle including proper diet and exercise.
