As we get older, the midsection can be one of the most challenging areas of the body to keep in shape. Even with a good diet and regular exercise, loose, hanging skin can persist around the abdominal area and torso. In addition to aging, the effects of pregnancy, weight loss, and genetics can contribute to this common concern. A tummy tuck procedure, or abdominoplasty, performed at Mesna Plastic Surgery in Minneapolis, MN, can tighten and remove excess skin for improved contouring. If you are concerned about the appearance of your midsection or long for a flatter tummy, Dr. Gregory T. Mesna can help. During a personalized consultation, you can learn more about abdominoplasty or find out if you are a good candidate for the procedure.
Tummy tuck surgery is an optimal cosmetic procedure for patients who are bothered by excess, sagging skin in their abdominal area. Patients who have lost a lot of weight or have been unable to tone abdominal muscles following pregnancy can be good candidates as well. For some, stubborn fat pockets also remain despite a commitment to healthy diet and exercise.
While this procedure is not meant to be a weight loss tool, abdominoplasty can trim a few pounds and provide significant body contouring to make you appear much leaner. Lax muscles naturally make you look heavier and affect your shape, and excess skin and fat pockets add unwanted bulk. A tummy tuck eliminates unsightly bulges and gives you a trim, toned silhouette. Tighter, form-fitting clothing will be more flattering and you can feel increased confidence in your appearance.

Types of Prodcures
Dr. Mesna offers several different types of tummy tucks and surgical techniques, and can suggest the optimal treatment for your unique needs. In general, the best time to have a tummy tuck is when you feel committed to maintaining your current weight and will not be planning a future pregnancy.
Traditional Tummy Tuck
Traditional tummy tuck surgery can address the entire abdominal area above and below the belly button. This is the most popular type of abdominoplasty, as it addresses many common concerns. This tummy tuck smooths away a “poochy” abdomen and also trims the waist line, providing a more streamlined, fit look for the torso area.
To begin this procedure, Dr. Mesna will create an incision across the lower abdoment from hip to hip, which will provide him with access to underlying tissue and musculature. While some scarring is inevitable with any tummy tuck, Dr. Mesna will take great care to minimize any evidence of surgery, positioning the incision so it can be easily concealed.
Once the incisions are made, Dr. Mesna will begin tightening loose tissue and repairing separated abdominal muscles, if needed. This latter step is most often recommended for women who have been pregnant. It is accomplished by pulling the abdominal muscles closer together and stitching them in a position that creates a more toned appearance. Patients will typically have some fatty deposits removed using liposuction, creating a more dramatic cosmetic enhancement. Finally, the skin is pulled taut and the excess trimmed away, then stitches close the incision.
Mini Tummy Tuck
A mini tummy tuck, or partial abdominoplasty, is similar to a traditional tummy tuck, but only addresses the area below the belly button. Mini tummy tucks are intended for patients who have a small to moderate amount of excess skin. Dr. Mesna will create a single, small incision below the navel. He will then lift loose, sagging tissue and remove small amounts of fat and skin before closing the incision. Mini tummy tucks result in a less dramatic change than a traditional procedure, but are also associated with reduced pain and recovery times.
Extended Tummy Tuck
When patients have lost a significant amount of weight, it is common to have loose skin that extends around the waist and over the hips. Dr. Mesna will typically recommend an extended tummy tuck to help these patients achieve the most comprehensive results. In this procedure, the incision will be extend beyond the front of the hips to allow Dr. Mesna access to the tissue near the “love handles” and in some cases, the back of the torso. Once the incision has been made, he will remove excess skin and fat on the sides and back, in addition to performing the traditional tummy tuck procedure.
Tummy Tuck Recovery
Any tummy tuck procedure will require several weeks of significantly reduced activity and at least one week of downtime. You should arrange to have a friend or loved one help you for a few days after surgery. Dr. Mesna will closely monitor your recovery period and remain available to answer any questions or concerns. Some swelling and bruising as well as tenderness and soreness is to be expected the first week. Our office will prescribe pain medication to help ensure you remain as comfortable as possible during this period.
Initially, most patients will also have drainage tubes placed to remove accumulated blood and fluid near the incision sites. These drains are typically removed in three to seven days. You will also be required to wear a compression garment for several weeks after your procedure. This tight piece of clothing can help with blood flow, facilitating healing, as well as helping your skin and tissues to adjust to your final, desired contour.
Dr. Mesna is dedicated to providing personalized care, and will work closely with you to design a procedure that addresses your unique concerns.
Although it is important not to lift heavy items to avoid straining your incisions, you should still regularly walk for short distances. This habit can improve circulation and help avoid complications during recovery. It is also important to maintain a good diet and reduce sodium to control swelling. It is also vital that you avoid alcohol and cigarettes to prevent a delay in you recovery.
Your total recovery time will vary, especially after more extensive procedures. Many patients with sedentary occupations can return to work in about a week after a mini tummy tuck. A traditional abdominoplasty may take up to two weeks to return to activities, and an extended tummy take may take up to several weeks. More strenuous activities will need to be postponed until your incisions are fully healed. Vigorous exercise should be avoided until you have been cleared by Dr. Mesna.
