If you are troubled by fine lines and wrinkles or lost volume in your face, you may be a good candidate for Restylane®, available at our Minneapolis practice. Restylane® is a type of dermal filler, a volumizing gel injected just under the surface of the skin. It offers immediate, lifelike effects, making it a great treatment option for patients who want significant yet subtle and natural results. Restylane® is one of the most well-established and popular types of dermal fillers, and it is proven effective in treating all areas of the face that are prone to wrinkles, as well as some areas of the body. It is particularly well-suited to minimizing lines around the mouth and boosting volume in the lips. Is Restylane® right for you? Ask Dr. Mesna during a private consultation.
The Science Behind Restylane®
Restylane® is made from hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring substance produced in the body which absorbs moisture and gives a healthy glow to your face and skin. As you age your body gradually produces less HA. In turn, your face may begin to lose volume, your skin may droop, and wrinkles may develop.
During Restylane® treatment, Dr. Mesna injects a small amount of gel just under the surface of the skin, where it takes the place of lost HA, adding volume and reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Unlike other HA-based dermal fillers, Restylane® is not created from animal sources, but is synthetically fabricated in a lab. As a result, its formulation makes it a safer treatment option for those with allergies to certain animal products.
Candidacy & Treatment
To help you best achieve your aesthetic goals, you will undergo a thorough evaluation with Dr. Mesna. During this appointment, you will discuss your medical history, current medications, concerns, and expected treatment outcome. If he determines that Restylane® is right for you, the doctor will cleanse and prepare the treatment area, and might use a topical numbing gel to reduce discomfort. Once the area is prepped, he will inject the gel just under the surface of the skin. Treatment typically takes an hour or less. No downtime is required, and immediate effects include smoother, plumper skin.
Following your Restylane® injections, you may experience some minor discomfort, which can be treated with cold compresses. You should avoid touching your face for at least six hours, and you should stay out of the sun and cold temperatures. The results of Restylane® treatment typically last six months to a year. However, patients who received a follow-up treatment after four-and-a-half to nine months typically enjoyed the effects for eighteen months following their initial injection.
Restylane vs. Other Dermal Fillers
We offer several types of injectables at Mesna Plastic Surgery. Dr. Mesna will work closely with you to help determine which treatment is the best fit for you. For example, both JUVÉDERM® and Restylane® are HA-based gels. JUVÉDERM® is quite effective at minimizing lines and wrinkles, but Restylane® is typically better suited to patients who want to add more volume to their face, particularly their lips.
