Ideal Candidates for Breast Implants

Breast augmentation improves your overall shape by changing the size and shape of your bust. Increasing a cup size or more can work wonders to enhance your contours, helping you look beautiful in body-conscious clothing or a bikini.

Most women who are dissatisfied with their breast size are potential augmentation candidates. Similarly, patients who have uneven or naturally oblong breasts can enjoy beautiful new symmetry and a pleasing, rounded shape.

Breast implants will make a difference in your appearance and may improve your self-esteem. The key to successful breast augmentation is having realistic expectations about the procedure. Generally speaking, patients should expect a confidence boost rather than a complete life transformation.

The timing of your breast augmentation is also very important. Factors that affect breast augmentation candidacy include:

Age – The minimum age for breast augmentation with saline implants is 18. By law, you must be 22 before you can have silicone implants. The vast majority of young women are fully developed by the age of 18, though some may continue to grow at 19. If your family history includes delayed breast development, it may be best to wait until you are 20.

Middle-aged women will begin to experience sagging of breast tissue at some point, and a breast lift may be recommended either alone or in conjunction with breast augmentation. You can enhance your lift with the addition of implants to add volume.

Pregnancy – For women planning to have children in the near future, it may be best to delay breast augmentation until pregnancy and breastfeeding are complete. Pregnancy weight gain and engorgement of the breasts can often cause some sagging to occur. However, if you do choose to undergo augmentation before pregnancy, you should talk with Dr. Mesna about the incision type and implant location you choose. He can make recommendations to help avoid complications with breastfeeding after your surgery.

Many women’s breasts and bodies are changed after childbirth, and this is a popular time to seek a "mommy makeover," a comprehensive procedure that often incorporates breast augmentation. Some women who already have implants choose to undergo a second procedure after pregnancy.

Weight  - Extreme weight fluctuations can have adverse effects on breast augmentation. It is best to have implants placed when you are near your goal weight and expect to remain in this range. If you plan to lose a significant amount of weight, it is best to delay augmentation until after that time.

We provide complete information about treatment options and expected outcomes, ensuring our patients are healthy and thoroughly prepared to choose whether to undergo breast augmentation.

Health Recommendations

Dr. Mesna will review your health history during your initial appointment. Patients may be precluded if they suffer from a blood clotting disorder or weakened immunity.

It is important for breast augmentation candidates to be willing to refrain from smoking (and all nicotine) a few months prior to the procedure and during the recovery process. Ideally, patients will break the habit completely. Nicotine affects blood vessels, reducing the amount of blood that reaches breast tissue. This can increase the risk of complications from your surgery and affect healing.

Alcohol should also be eliminated for a period of time – at least a week before and after surgery. Alcohol causes dehydration, which also increases the risk of complications.
