Smooth vs. Textured Implants: Which Surface Is Best Suited for You? By Mesna Plastic Surgery & Aesthetic Center on October 02, 2023

woman comparing smooth vs. textured implantsEvery year, millions of women undergo breast augmentation to enhance the size and shape of their breasts. Breast augmentation helps patients achieve their aesthetic goals and feel more confident about their appearance.

When preparing for breast augmentation at Mesna Plastic Surgery & Aesthetic Center in Minneapolis, MN, there are several decisions to make. The surgery is highly customizable, and Dr. Gregory T. Mesna believes patients should be involved in personalizing the procedure. One way in which breast implants are unique is their texture. Dr. Mesna helps patients consider smooth vs. textured implants and which surface is best suited to their specific needs and desires.

Pros and Cons of Smooth Implants

Smooth implants consist of a silicone or saline center encapsulated by a smooth outer shell. Smooth implants offer several aesthetic and functional benefits. Silicone implants are softer than textured implants, which many believe gives them a more realistic look and feel. While both types of implants should last for many years, sometimes smooth implants last longer than textured implants.

When comparing smooth and textured implants, patients should consider the potential drawbacks of each. With any type of implant, there is a low risk of rippling or shifting. The risk of visible rippling or shifting out of its implant pocket is slightly higher with a smooth implant than a textured implant because smooth implants don’t adhere as well to breast tissues.

Pros and Cons of Textured Implants

Textured implants consist of a silicone or saline center encapsulated by a grainy or sandy-feeling outer shell. All teardrop-shaped implants are textured, but round implants are available with a textured shell as well. Textured implants are preferred by some of our Minneapolis patients because they adhere to breast tissues and are less likely to slip or shift out of place. The textured surface can also minimize the risk of capsular contracture, a condition that develops when scar tissues create a capsule around the breast implant.

As with smooth implants, there are potential drawbacks with textured implants. Textured implants feel and look firmer than smooth implants, which gives them a less natural appearance. While textured implants are not as likely to develop visible rippling as smooth implants, there is a small chance of folding or wrinkling.

Making a Decision About Which Type of Implant Is Right for You

Smooth and textured implants add volume to the bust line to enhance a woman’s figure. When determining whether smooth or textured implants are best for each of our Minneapolis patients, there are several factors to consider, such as:

  • The amount of existing breast tissue
  • The location of the implant pocket (behind or in front of the chest muscles)
  • The shape of the breast implant
  • The patient’s aesthetic goals

Taking all other surgical factors into consideration, Dr. Mesna can help patients make an informed decision between smooth and textured implants.
