BOTOX® Cosmetic is a wrinkle-reducing injectable offered at Mesna Plastic Surgery. This medication is injected into targeted areas of the face, usually between the eyebrows and at the corners of the eyes, relaxing the muscles beneath the skin. By relaxing these muscles, they no longer aggressively form and re-form into certain expressions that cause wrinkles. BOTOX® Cosmetic lasts three to six months.
When you come into the office and have Botox, we would clean your skin with a little bit of prep, a little alcohol wipe, and we would put a little medication from a tiny, little needle into the skin, and many times, right into the muscle itself that we’re trying to target. That medication then would take about maybe 2 days maybe to 5 or 6 days to setup, and then that muscle wouldn’t move as harshly against the skin.
Results from Botox can typically be seen between 2 to 5 days after being placed. Results that patients might see would be maybe a 20% to 30% correction in their creases, and they would wear their results for approximately 3 to 5 months. The treatment of Botox takes about 5 to 10 minutes max. Once we’ve prepped the skin, it takes just a few little injection points, very small needle through the skin. You will want to continue Botox treatments every 3 to 5 months for the rest of your life or for as long as you want to keep the results in place.
Probably the most common side effects of Botox, in particular in the, we call it the glabellar frown line or the frown area, which seems to be the most common, might be a dull headache, potentially a little bruise. Side effects listed in the PI, or the product insert, you might find flu-like symptoms, redness, a little swelling. We don’t really see these very commonly in my practice. I would say a little bruise or potentially a dull headache are some of the more common side effects that I have seen in this practice.
