Laser Hair Removal Minneapolis

It’s important to have smooth, silky skin, but the daily hassle of shaving may not give you satisfactory results, and can often be a lot to fit into your busy schedule. Other methods, like waxing, can be painful and expensive. If you are tired of battling unwanted hair, consider laser hair removal at one of Mesna Plastic Surgery’s two Minneapolis locations. This non-invasive, nearly painless treatment uses high-power laser beams to discourage hair growth. Laser hair removal is extremely safe and effective, making this treatment one of the most common cosmetic skin care treatments in the country. How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Woman in white shorts and tank top with smooth, tanned leggsUsing a handheld device, Dr. Gregory Mesna directs a laser beam toward the treatment area, and laser energy passes into the skin and is absorbed by the hair follicles. Each hair follicle follows a development cycle consisting of resting phases and growth phases. If the follicle is in the growth phase during treatment, it will become inactive, inhibiting further hair growth. Because follicles are simultaneously at different points in the growth cycle, you will typically need to undergo several treatments for more comprehensive results that will leave you with soft, silky skin. The number of treatment sessions you require will depend on your individual skin and hair type, and the area being treated. An area with thinner skin, such as the bikini line, will typically respond much more quickly than a thicker-skinned area, like the back.

After Treatment

Following your laser treatment, you may experience some minor redness and irritation which can be treated with ice, aloe vera gel, and mild over-the-counter pain medication. You should also avoid sun exposure and tanning beds immediately following treatment. After your skin has healed, you should use a gentlesunscreen with an SPF of 30 or above.

Laser hair removal is actually more accurately described as “hair reduction.” Though the treatment will not completely eliminate your hair, it can drastically curtail hair growth, sometimes for years. Depending on your cosmetic goals, Dr. Mesna may recommend touch-up treatments to ensure long-lasting results.

Candidates for Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal can be used to treat virtually any area of the body that is prone to unwanted hair. The most common treatment areas include:

  • Legs
  • Bikini area
  • Back
  • Upper lip
  • Armpit

In the past, patients with light skin and dark hair were considered the “ideal candidates” for laser hair removal. Today, advancements in laser technology have made this treatment far more effective for patients with darker skin. It is important to note, though, that patients with white or extremely pale hair may not be suited for laser hair removal.
