Blepharoplasty Recovery Minneapolis

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, can diminish conspicuous signs of aging by correcting unwanted sagging or drooping of the eyelids. As with any other surgery, this procedure involves a period of recovery. Dr. Gregory T. Mesna recommends that patients closely follow their aftercare instructions in order to quickly recover and enjoy the full benefits of a blepharoplasty.

Eyelid surgery recovery after undergoing this procedure at our Minnesota, MN, practice may take several weeks, but the results can last for years to come.

Patients can expect to enjoy the full results of surgery, an entirely rejuvenated and refreshed
appearance, approximately one to two months after undergoing the procedure.

What to Expect after Eye Surgery

Upper eyelid surgery and lower eyelid surgery target sagging skin and bags to create younger-looking eyes. Depending on the techniques used, and your treatment goals, upper eyelid blepharoplasty generally takes 45 minutes to one hour to complete, and lower eyelid blepharoplasty takes one to two hours. Both surgeries are performed on an outpatient basis.

Dr. Mesna can restore a youthful appearance or correct eyelids impairing your vision with blepharoplasty, all while keeping your lifestyle and aesthetic goals in mind.

The eyelids typically feel tight immediately after surgery. Any soreness can be treated with painkillers, and Dr. Mesna will lubricate incisions with ointment. Applying this ointment to the affected area for the first two days after the procedure is important to avoid dryness.

You should plan on having a loved one drive you home after surgery, and rest with your head elevated at home. You can also apply cold compresses, no heavier than one ounce, to soothe your eyes.

The Recovery Process

Full recovery from eyelid surgery typically takes several weeks. Sutures will be removed sometime in the first week after the procedure, and redness and swelling around the eyes will fade within seven to 10 days. Your eyes may tear more than usual in the first few days following surgery. Resting your head in an elevated position as much as possible can minimize bruising.

Throughout the first week, you should ensure that your eyes receive plenty of rest. Avoid activities that can cause dryness, such as reading, watching television, wearing contact lenses, and using a computer. Also avoid excessive blinking, which can increase swelling. You should be able to return to work approximately 10 days after your blepharoplasty.

It is recommended that you wear dark sunglasses for a couple of weeks following the procedure to protect your eyes from the sun and wind. For the first three to four weeks after the surgery, also avoid activities that increase blood flow to the eyes, including bending, lifting heavy objects, and playing sports. Dr. Mesna can advise you on when you may resume your exercise routine.

Long-lasting Results

The results of a blepharoplasty are long-lasting. The thin scars from the incisions will become inconspicuous over time, and can be easily concealed with makeup.

Because the aging process will continue in spite of the procedure, loosened skin and wrinkling of the eye may return in the future, but the removal of fat will be permanent. Our patients are generally extremely pleased with their results for years following eyelid surgery.
