About Traditional Abdominoplasty

A traditional tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure that removes excess fat and skin from the abdomen, repairs loose or separated abdominal muscles, and tightens remaining tissue. The result is a flatter, more toned midsection.

The Tummy Tuck Procedure

woman's toned stomachWhile you are under general anesthesia, Dr. Mesna will make a horizontal incision low on your abdomen, which will extend from hip to hip. Through the incision, he will remove excess fat and skin from your abdomen. Depending on your needs, this can involve liposuction. He will also tighten and repair the abdominal muscles using permanent sutures. Next, Dr. Mesna will tighten the skin and close the incisions.

The procedure takes about two to three hours to complete.Your abdominoplasty will be performed as an outpatient procedure or require an overnight stay, depending on Dr. Mesna’s recommendation.

Postoperative Care and Recovery

After your surgery, the incision site will be covered with a surgical dressing. For the first two to three days after surgery, your bed will need to positioned so that your upper body is slightly raised and your knees are kept at an angle. You can expect to feel some pain, but Dr. Mesna can prescribe medication to help minimize discomfort. Most patients find they are able to return to work two weeks after surgery. However, for the next six weeks, you will be required to wear a supportive abdominal garment. You will also need to avoid placing strain on your incisions for the next three months. The scar site may appear red when the bandages are removed, but should gradually fade to a thin, subdued line after nine months or a year. An abdominoplasty scar can be easily concealed while wearing swimwear and other revealing clothes.

Risks

When performed by an experienced surgeon, complications with traditional tummy tuck procedures are rare. However, they can include:

  • Pain and swelling
  • Infection
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Blood clots
  • Poor healing

Dr. Mesna uses highly precise techniques to minimize these risks.

Candidates

As with any major surgical procedure, patients should be in good health before undergoing a tummy tuck. Women who wish to tighten their abdominal muscles and reduce excess tissue after pregnancy can be good candidates for a tummy tuck. Because pregnancy can separate the abdominal muscles, the best candidates are women who do not wish to have more children.

Patients who have lost a substantial amount of weight often find they have excess fat deposits and loose skin around their waist. It is important to understand that abdominoplasty is not a weight loss procedure. Instead, it is intended to provide body contouring following weight loss.
