Permanently Reduce Sweating with miraDry®

Many people constantly worry about underarm sweat and odor. Fortunately, a revolutionary treatment is available that can reduce or eliminate this problem altogether. By using electromagnetic energy and targeting sweat glands under the arms, this treatment allows patients to remain active without being concerned about perspiration and odor. Advanced miraDry®, a noninvasive underarm treatment, is now offered in Minneapolis, MN, at Mesna Plastic Surgery. During a consultation, Dr. Gregory T. Mesna can answer your questions about miraDry® and determine whether the treatment is right for you. Contact our office and schedule an appointment today.

Are You a Candidate for miraDry®?

A woman's underarm after miraDry® treatmentFor a variety of reasons, some people perspire more than others. Speaking in front of a group or sitting across from your date with noticeably wet armpits can be embarrassing. Deodorant can help, but it is often insufficient and can leave stains on clothing. While BOTOX® injections can be used to temporarily block sweat glands, miraDry® aims to permanently restrict their activity.

About 3% of the U.S. population suffers from a clinical condition called hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating. Many more people feel that they simply perspire heavily. Exercise, warm weather, tight clothing, and anxiety can all contribute to excessive perspiration. Anyone who wants to enjoy a workout, social event, or business occasion without worrying about excessive underarm moisture is a potential candidate for miraDry®.

The miraDry® Procedure

Approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the miraDry® system uses electromagnetic energy to target sweat and odor glands in the underarm, diminishing them permanently. This treatment uses thermolysis, or decomposition by heat, to reduce or eliminate activity of the sweat glands.

To begin the procedure, your underarms will be treated with local anesthetic to ensure your comfort. The miraDry® hand piece is activated and applied to the skin. Your skin will be cooled and protected throughout the process, which takes about an hour for both arms. Studies indicate that sweat volume is reduced by an average of over 80% in treated patients.

A Safe, Comfortable Treatment

Some patients may be worried about the effects of permanently treating the sweat glands. The underarms contain less than 2% of over four million sweat glands found throughout the body. Experts have shown that eliminating underarm glands does not have a negative effect on the body’s thermoregulation, and no excessive sweating in other areas has been found to occur. Antiperspirants have been used for decades to stop moisture and odor without negative side effects.

Electromagnetic energy is widely used in other areas of medicine, including cardiology, general surgery, and oncology. This technology has been demonstrated as a safe and effective way to use heat and reduce unwanted tissue.
