Breast Enlargement with Implants — Helping Patients from Edina, Minnetonka, and Minneapolis-St.Paul Attain Beautiful Curves

There are a number of different reasons why women choose to undergo breast augmentation. Many do so because they feel that their breasts are out of proportion with the rest of their body. Some women find that after having children, they want to restore volume and firmness to their breasts. Others simply want to enhance their natural curves for greater aesthetic appeal. Many of our patients also choose to complement their breast enlargement procedure with a tummy tuck or liposuction for a more comprehensive makeover. Dr. Gregory T. Mesna uses high-quality breast implants for breast enlargement surgery at our Edina practice, serving Minnetonka and the nearby Minneapolis-St. Paul metro regions, to provide women with excellent results and help them achieve their individual goals.

Types of Breast Implants

Two basic types of breast implants are used in breast augmentation surgery: silicone and saline. Both have specific benefits and risks. Both silicone and saline breast implants vary in size, shape, and texture. The decision about which type is right for a patient is based on a number of factors and will be determined after Dr. Mesna and the patient have discussed the patient's goals, medical history, lifestyle, and other issues. Dr. Mesna will make recommendations on which implants will provide the most appealing results based on the patient's body type and aesthetic goals.

Silicone Breast Implants

Although silicone implants underwent a great deal of scrutiny and were unavailable for many years, they were re-approved by the FDA in 2006 after significant research failed to show any connection between the implants and adverse effects to a patient's health. Some women prefer silicone breast implants because silicone more closely mimics natural breast tissue. Silicone breast implants are now available for enlargement procedures at our Edina practice in the Minnetonka area to help our patients achieve the look they desire.

Saline Breast Implants

Saline breast implants consist of a silicone shell filled with a sterile saline, or saltwater, solution. Because this solution is easily and safely absorbed by the body if the implant ruptures, many people feel that saline implants are a safer alternative. Also, because the implant will deflate quickly as the saline leaks from the shell, damage to saline implants is immediately noticeable and is likely to be addressed more quickly.

Breast Implant Incisions and Placement

There are several different ways that breast implants can be inserted and positioned. Common incision sites include the crease beneath the breast, the edge around the areola, and the underarm area. Each of these areas offers reasonable concealment of the surgical scars, but one may be more appropriate than another, depending on the individual patient and the type of breast implants being used.

Breast implants may also be placed either above or below the chest muscle. Subglandular placement (above the muscle but beneath the breast tissue) offers a little faster recovery but may not be as natural looking or feeling. Submuscular placement, however, reduces the risk of capsular contracture and the likelihood that the implants will be visible beneath the skin.

Recovery after Surgery

The length of the recovery period after breast enlargement surgery varies from patient to patient. Most patients can return to work a few days after their operation, although patients whose jobs require a significant amount of physical activity may need to wait longer. Soreness can be expected to last for three to four weeks and sometimes longer in patients whose breast implants are placed beneath the chest muscle.

Breast Enlargement Candidacy and Risks

During the initial consultation at our practice, Dr. Mesna will ask about a patient's goals, expectations, and medical history to determine whether that patient is a good candidate for breast enlargement surgery. In addition to being in good general health, it is important that the patient has reasonable expectations and a thorough understanding of the surgery and its risks.

While all surgical procedures involve certain risks, there are some potential complications that are unique to breast enlargement. These include capsular contracture, rippling, and rupture of one or both of the breast implants. Dr. Mesna will discuss each of these conditions with the patient before surgery, as well as how to minimize the chances of experiencing complications.
