Breast Augmentation Surgery
Breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure offered at Mesna Plastic Surgery that adds volume to a woman's bust. Breast augmentation can be performed using saline or silicone implants. These implants can be inserted above or below the breast muscle, and may be inserted through an incision below the breast, around the nipple, or in the armpit. Breast augmentation can boost a woman's confidence while enhancing her figure.
Preparing for Your Procedure
In the planning stages of your breast augmentation, Dr. Mesna will have a detailed discussion with you concerning your aesthetic goals and help you understand the different choices you will need to make. Several factors will affect how your surgery is performed and what type of results you can expect:
- Incision Type - Dr. Mesna can insert your breast implants through periareolar (around the areola), inframammary (below the breast), or transaxillary (under the armpit) incisions. The incision pattern you select will depend on the amount of scarring you are comfortable with and the type of implant you choose.
- Type of Implant - We offer both saline and silicone breast implants. Each type has unique benefits that you will need to consider before selecting the best choice for your body type, budget, and treatment goals.
- Placement Technique - Breast implants can be placed above or below the pectoral muscle. Implants placed below the muscle are typically a better choice for women who may have children and choose to breastfeed in the future. The implants' placement will affect both your results and the length of your recovery period.

The Surgical Process
On the day of your surgery, you will need to bring a friend or loved one with you to your appointment. While Dr. Mesna performs breast augmentation as an outpatient procedure, you will be unable to drive and need care following surgery. Before the procedure begins, Dr. Mesna will mark the incision sites and clean the treatment area. Dr. Mesna will administer local anesthetic and sedation to help you relax and remain comfortable.
Once you are fully sedated, Dr. Mesna will create incisions around your nipples, below your breasts, or in your armpits, depending on the incision type you have selected. If your incision is performed through the armpit, your implants will be placed endoscopically using long, thin instruments.
Dr. Mesna will create a pocket either above or below your pectoral muscle before placing each implant. If you choose to receive saline implants, deflated silicone shells will be unrolled within your breasts, then filled through a long tube with a saline solution. If you opt for silicone implants, they will simply be placed within your breasts. Dr. Mesna will evaluate the appearance and symmetry of your breasts and make any necessary adjustments before closing your incisions.
Follow-up and Aftercare
After your surgery is complete, Dr. Mesna will bandage your breasts and give you specialized instructions on caring for your incisions over the next few days. You will return for a follow-up appointment in the days following your surgery to ensure you are free from infection and healing properly. Dr. Mesna will instruct you on special massage techniques to aid healing and direct you on how long you need to wait before resuming normal activities.
