Eyelid Surgery in Male vs. Female Patients By on May 22, 2017

Illustration of eyelid surgery treatment sitesAging is a universal problem that affects men and women equally. Plastic surgeon Gregory T. Mesna knows from experience that men and women are also just as likely to want to address signs of aging and restore a more youthful, refreshed appearance. However, while both men and women may want to look younger, the specific aesthetic they are looking for is often quite different.

Women generally want softer lines and contours, while men typically want to maintain more defined and masculine facial features. Because of this, we approach facial plastic surgery differently for men and women.

When performing blepharoplasty to smooth and firm the skin of the upper or lower lids, Dr. Mesna will take into account whether the patient is male or female, and the ultimate goal for surgery. Here, we discuss some of the differences regarding eyelid surgery for male vs. female patients at our Minneapolis, MN plastic surgery practice.

Eyelid Surgery Candidates

Both men and women are ideal candidates for eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty. This procedure addresses common signs of aging directly around the eyes, including heavy, drooping eyelids, and bags or saggy skin beneath the eyes. Depending on a patient’s specific needs, eyelid surgery may be performed on the upper or lower lids. Though eyelid surgery can be performed at virtually any age (as long as the patient is in good overall health and has realistic expectations for surgery), Dr. Mesna finds that most of his blepharoplasty patients are aged 40 or above.

Female Eyelid Surgery

Women undergoing eyelid surgery often want to smooth out the skin around the lower eyelids, or remove excess skin to create a more defined and feminine upper lid. Although each procedure and patient is unique, there is typically quite a bit of fat and tissue removed during a female eyelid surgery procedure. Dr. Mesna will also reposition the eyelid tissues to restore a more refreshed appearance. Female eyelid surgery can take years off a woman’s appearance without altering her natural appearance.

Male Eyelid Surgery

Male eyelid surgery is very popular. Actually, eyelid surgery is second only to liposuction when it comes to male plastic surgery. As with female patients, men who undergo eyelid surgery wish to restore a more youthful appearance. However, most men do not want to drastically change the shape of the upper eyelid, as this can produce a more feminine appearance.

To reverse the signs of aging without creating a feminine appearance, Dr. Mesna will focus more on the underlying facial tissues and structures when performing male eyelid surgery. While some fat and tissue may be removed from the upper eyelid area, it is not usually as much as that removed during a female blepharoplasty.
